A.Etegami=E(picture)+Tegami(letter) It is similar to postcard art, but with more to offer... It takes focus and concentration, and you will have great fun. Uses unique Japanese calligraphy methods in drawing lines. Water color on washi paper creates an interesting effect. Writing a simple message to someone is relaxing and satisfying. Q. Do I have to be good at drawing? A. You don’t have to be good at drawing/coloring at all. "Writing a letter"&“Sending your heart” is etegami. One of the most important etegami philosophies is "imperfect is perfect", ”not good is even better” Q. How long has etegami been around? A. It was started in late ’70s by Mr.Kunio Koike. Q. What should/can I draw? A. Anything. It is best if your subject is placed in front of you, but you can use photo, art, pictures. Seasonal items are highly recommended (flower, leaves, fruits, vegetables). Q. What is the best material to draw for beginners? A. Something with very simple lines. Ex. Orange, apple, pear, tomato, banana. Q. Size of etegami art? A. Usually it is a postcard size (4x6”).

Japanese Art experience sessions coming SOON!

書道・絵手紙・墨絵 体験

Starting in April, launching a new "Art Experience Group”

Held on: The 3rd Wednesday of every month

Duration: 10am- 12pm, 5pm-7pm

Location: 207 Ash St. Lake Oswego, OR 97034

The Wednesday Two-Hour Art Experience is a flexible and relaxed group, allowing you to explore Shodo, Etegami, or Sumie based on your interests. I will introduce different formats and examples in each area, but the focus is on your enjoyment—you don’t have to follow the instructions exactly.

While instruction will be light, I can offer more hands-on guidance compared to the one-hour Sunday salon experience. For those who are more serious about exploring shodo calligraphy, I highly recommend combining the group salon with private lessons, especially for those interested in working toward a certificate program.

In this 2hr group, you’re welcome to stay for 30 minutes, one hour, or the full two hours—whatever suits you best!
